Author & Advocate

I am a doctor of neurology and a mother who has twice endured every parent’s worst fear: the illness and death of a child. Spit the Sky in Two is the story of my journey mothering two intelligent and charismatic boys, both of whom suffered from rapid-rapid cycling bipolar with psychosis, and both of whom eventually took their own lives in their twenties, nine months apart. The manuscript is in the vein of When Breath Becomes Air, the story of a physician confronting death, and Hidden Valley Road, the history of a family’s near destruction by schizophrenia. Split the Sky in Two is a memoir of excruciating loss and survival, told through the intimate lens of a mother and medical expert.
